[Also in Division F2] A winch drive system includes an interlock apparatus which prevents any gear change unless the winch brake is applied and prevents release of the brake while the gear change is in a neutral position. The brake including shoes 3 and drum 2 is operated by a cam 5 on a lever 7, which is movable up and down for operation by a screwed portion of a rotatable brake shaft 11 engaging a screwed aperture in a part 9 of the lever 7. As the latter is moved down from the position 7A to apply the brake, the resistance to brake application forces the shaft 11 axially up against a compression spring 28 until a stop 27 is abutted, by which time the brake is applied and a slot 42 in the shaft 11 is brought into register with a spring-loaded interlock plate 39. It is only while plate 39 is seated in the slot 42, that an interlock lever 35 associated with gear change lever 13, is able to pass between an abutment 36 and the plate 39 to change gear, the neutral position of the lever 35 being directly between the abutment 36 and plate 39, whereby the brake cannot be released until the lever 35 is moved from this neutral position.
