1,024,457. Internal shoe drum brakes. H. - TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINENUND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM. GES.]. March 19, 1964 [March 28, 1963], No. 11648/64. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe drum brake having an automatic slack-adjuster 5 disposed between the non- actuated ends 31, 32 of a pair of shoes 3, 4, and comprising a cable 6 connected between one shoe and, by way of roller 11 and lever 7, a bush 13, 13a of the adjuster 5 having spring-urged pawls 26 cooperating with helical ratchet teeth 25 on a sleeve 19 which threadedly engages oppositely threaded tappets 28, 29 for the shoe ends 31, 32, manual adjustment of the sleeve 19 can be effected by a tool inserted through a bore 40 in the casing of the adjuster, after removal of a plug 41, and through slots 42 in bush 13 into apertures 43 in the sleeve 19. For resetting the adjuster after fitting new linings, a pin 15 which is threaded into the casing and engages slots 14 in the bush to prevent rotation of the latter is removed so that the bush can be rotated. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the pin 15 is replaced by a spring-loaded plate 44 in the bore 40 and slots 14 are replaced by recesses 46 adapted to be engaged by a projecting portion 45 of the plate 44. The brake is of the type which is normally leading-traling, since the sleeve 19 is located against movement axially by a shoulder 22. When braking in the reverse direction of rotation of the drum sleeve 19 can slide axially to transmit drag force on shoe 4 to shoe 3, adjustment being effected as for the forward direction.
