Abstract

1,029,800. Automatic brake-adjusters. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND. Dec. 11, 1963 [Jan. 3, 1963], No. 48934/63. Heading F2E. A duo-servo brake has a turnbuckle-type slack-adjuster interconnecting the end of brake shoes 1 and 2 and whose slack-adjusting sleeve 6 has a unidirectionally operating ratchet wheel 11 engaging a tooth 24 of a lever 10 pivoted on the brake shoe leading at rearward travel and having an end 25 which engages with a stop on the brake carrier when the brake is off. The stop is at one end of a fixed guide-block 5 in bores 22 in which the sleeve 6 is slidably supported. One end of the sleeve in the bore 22 is machined to full diameter and the other end is brought out to the same diameter by a sleeve 17 fixed by a circlip 16, thus forming shoulders 15 against which disc washers 18 and 19 abut. A spring 7 between the washers normally centralizes the adjusting sleeve 6 relative to the block 5. The lever 10 is pivoted at 23 on the shoe 2 and is urged against the stop by a spring 23. When braking at forward travel (as indicated by the arrow) the shoe 1 is dragged by the drum and acts through the adjuster on the shoe 2 to force it against the drum wall so that the shoes, the lever 10, the ratchet wheel and the sleeve all move together releasing the end 25 from the guide stop and compressing the spring 7. When the brake is released the parts return to their initial positions without brake adjustment. When the brake is applied in reverse the shoe 2 acts on the shoe 1 through the adjuster. The end 25 of the lever 10 rides up on the block 5 so that the tooth 24 jumps over one or more teeth of the ratchet 11 depending on the state of wear of the shoes. On release, the spring 7 re-centres the sleeve 6. The end 25 of the lever 10 remains against the stop whilst the lever 10 turns (as shown by the arrow) on its pivot 23 so that the tooth 24 rotates the ratchet wheel 11 to adjust the length of the tappets 8 and 9.
