Abstract
1299374 Internal shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 22 June 1970 [1 July 1969] 33182/69 Heading F2E In a servo-type internal-shoe drum-brake the force transmitted from the trailing edge 71 of a shoe 51 to the leading edge 72 of a shoe 52 is reduced by means of unit 3 disposed between the ends 53 of the shoes 51, 52 when the force is applied in one direction but is unreduced when the force is applied in the other direction. Shoes 51, 52 respectively engage slots 41 in plungers 4 of the unit 3 which plungers contact a cam 8, pivoted by means of trunnions 21, the cam profile of which is such that when the trailing edge 71 urges the associated plunger against the cam, the latter pivots and by virtue of its profile transmits the reduced force. The shoes may be manually or automatically adjusted and are provided for this purpose with a pin 11 extending from one trunnion 21 and having attached thereto a tie 138, Fig. 3 (not shown), which pulls on a lever (14) pivotalabout a bearing (141) against the bias of a spring 15. During braking in the reverse direction of rotation, a pawl (16) on return movement of lever (14) engages and turns a ratchet wheel 17 under the bias of spring 15 to extend the length of plungers 4 through screw threads 18, one plunger being oppositely threaded to the other. The motion from one plunger to the other is transmitted through the ratchet wheel 17 to a slave wheel 20 associated with the other plunger.
