Abstract

1,211,544. Ratchet gearing; brake actuating mechanism. MULTI-STROKE HANDBRAKE CONTROLS Ltd. 12 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967; 19 Dec., 1967], Nos. 27206/67 and 57553/67. Headings F2E and F2Q. [Also in Division B8] A ratchet device for a multi-stroke handbrake of a vehicle or trailer comprises a ratchet wheel 5 rotatable about the pivot 11 of a hand lever 7 to which a spring-loaded driving pawl 15 is pivoted at 17, and a spring-loaded holding pawl 8 having a fixed pivot 9, movement of the lever to an extreme position in which the pawls 8, 15 interengage so that both are lifted clear of the ratchet wheel (Fig. 2, not shown) normally being prevented by engagement of a block 19 slidable along the lever 7 with a fixed stop 20 before said extreme position is reached. To allow movement to the extreme position, the block 19 is moved towards the pivot 11 against a spring 24 by pushing a button 23 on the end of the lever. A flanged drum 4 rigid with the ratchet wheel 5 receives a brake cable 10.
