A motor vehicle hand brake control mechanism comprises an axially slidable rod 5, a lever 17 engaged and pivotable about pivot 25 by the rod, a rotary member 37 connected to the brakes, a first pawl and ratchet connection 27, 35 between the lever 17 and the rotary member 37 and a manually releasable pawl and ratchet connection 45, 35 between the rotary member 37 and the vehicle body. The rod 5 is pulled to the right to apply the brakes, which movement rocks the lever 17 clockwise and the pawl 27, as soon as it is clear of the abutment 67 holding it clear of the ratchet 35 in the brake release position, engages the ratchet 35 to rotate the member 37. The latter is connected to the brakes by a Bowden cable 41, 42. If the brakes are not fully applied the rod 5 may first be pushed back to the left, when the pawl 27 rides over the ratchet 35 and the pawl 45 prevents the member 37 from rotating so as to release the brakes, and then the rod 5 is pulled to the right again to fully apply the brakes. The brakes may be released by turning the handle 7 to rotate a spring-loaded plate 55 which in turn pushes a link 53 to rock the pawl 45 out of engagement with the ratchet 35.
