Abstract

1,214,575. Brake adjusters. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 13 Nov., 1968 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 3696/68. Heading F2E. A one-way ratchet-type clutch 34 (Fig. 2) is provided between the piston 18 of a fluidoperated brake applying means and a nut 27 mounted in the piston so as to have limited axial movement relative thereto and forming with a screw-threaded stem 23 a mechanically operated thrust member which also provides automatic adjustment. The clutch 34 comprises an arcuate plate 36 of spring metal having ends which engage splines 37 in the piston 18 and a tongue 38 which engages splines 39 on the nut 27. A shaft 41 mounted in a bearing 42 integral with cylinder 19 is rotated by a lever 44 against the pull of a spring 46 and is slotted to provide a radial surface 43 engaged by the end of the stem 23 and sides engaged by flats 23a to prevent rotation of the stem. A stop surface 45 on the lever 44 engages an end surface of cylinder 19. The piston 18 is held against rotation by a stud 35. When fluid is admitted to the cylinder 19 the stem 23 is pushed back to a position determined by the stop 45 and the piston 18 is pushed forward to apply the brake. If the brake clearance exceeds the limited axial movement of the nut 27 in the piston 18, the nut is moved along the stem 23. The arrangement is applicable to drum brakes.
