1,215,571. Stapling fibres and spinning bulky yarns. LINEN INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, 20 Dec., 1967 [21 Sept., 1966], No. 42054/66. Headings D1F and D1W. A method of making staple fibre with bulk potential comprises the steps of producing an assembly of filaments having variable shrinkage characteristics, stapling the filaments so that there are present potentially high shrinkage fibres which have a materially greater staple length, e.g. 1 inch greater, than the remaining fibres many of which will have substantially less shrinkability, and passing the staple fibres through a drafting system having a reach which will stretch break the fibres of high potential shrinkage but not the remaining fibres. The fibres are then spun into a yam and subjected to a uniform shrinkage process to cause variable shrinkage of the yam fibres. The assembly of filaments may be a single tow or a blend of two tows.
