Abstract

1327599 Composite yarns HERCULES INC 30 Dec 1970 [15 Jan 1970] 61809/70 Headings D1F and D1W A method of preparing a composite yarn comprises plying a fibrillated uniaxially drawn film and a substantially twist-free staple fibre roving 5 and twisting the plied structure whereby the roving is ensheathed within the fibrillated film. A uniaxially drawn flat or striated film 1 is fed by rollers 3 to a rotating serrated bar 2 where it is fibrillated. The fibrillated film is then fed through rollers 4 together with a twist free staple fibre roving 5 and the plied structure is twisted at 6 and wound on a package 7. The twisted structure may be subjected to the action of a fluid jet to disintegrate the roving and entangle the staple fibres with the fibrillated film. In a preferred embodiment, the film may be only partially drawn prior to fibrillation, and the twisted structure is subjected to an additional drawing operation. The filaments of the fibrillated film may be stufferbox crimped, air jet bulked or if bicomponents of different shrinkage are used, they may be bulked by heat treatment. Several twisted structures may be twisted together to give a multiply yarn. The film can be formed of any known film-forming polymer, examples given being polypropylene, acrylics, polyamides and polyesters. The staple fibre roving may be of natural or synthetic materials e.g. cotton, wool, silk or any fibre-forming synthetic polymer either the same as or different from the polymer used in the film.
