Abstract

Yarn possessing elastic properties e.g. recovery from a 10% extension, is produced by forming a yarn from at least two components, one thermoplastic and the other (3-15%) heat-shrinkable, heating the yarn to shrink the shrinkable component and to allow the thermoplastic component to deform, and subsequently stretching the resultant yarn to a length not greater than e.g. 90% of, its length before heating. The components may be continuous filaments or staple fibres of a polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester, polyolefin, polyvinylchloride or cellulose acetate or triacetate, which may have been previously crimped, or the shrinkable component may be a yarn thereof. The components may be blended as fibres or in the form of slivers, spun into singles yarns and doubled with twist opposed to the singles twist. The percentage shrinkabilities of the components differ by 10-50.
