In a metering valve, which is designed for use in association with vacuum apparatus, the valve closure member 22 has secured to a part 6 thereof a rod 8 whose other, uppermost, end is mounted within an adjustable nut 10, the nut resting on a hollow upright 9 secured to the valve body 1, 2 and the rod being made of low-carbon steel or other metals characterized by a high elastic limit in tension. In operation of the valve, rotation of a hand wheel 15 causes axial displacement of a bushing 16, the extent of such displacement being limited by first stop 26 engageable with a shoulder 27 on the upright 9 and a second, adjustable stop 25 secured to the upright 9. Such axial displacement of the bushing is transferred, via pins 14, to a sleeve 13 which in turn acts to alter the compression of a spring 12 disposed between it and the valve part 6, compression of the spring serving to elastically extend the metal rod and so cause seating of the valve member 22. A valve chamber 7, disposed downstream of the inlet 3, is hermetically sealed with respect to the outside of the valve by means of a bellows 16 and a sealing gasket 17.
