Lathes; attachments for turning. - An attachment for converting an ordinary lathe having a compound slide-rest into one for screw-cutting comprises a lead-screw 6, removably mounted on the cross-slide 1, driven from the spindle 10 and adapted to be engaged by a half-nut 9 which is automatically withdrawn when the required length of thread has been cut. The nut 9 is connected by a pin 17 to a hand-lever 18 mounted on the tool slide 4. When the lever 18 is depressed against the action of a spring 20 to throw in the nut, a spring bolt 21 engages under an adjustable bar 22 mounted on the slide 1. When the bolt passes the end of the bar 22, the spring 20 raises the nut 9 from the screw and the slide 4 can be returned by the lever 26. For a second deeper cut, the slide 1 may be advanced slightly on the saddle by the usual hand-screw 3, the gears 14 being initially spaced apart to allow of this. The movement of the slides may be limited by stops and lead-screw and nut can be changed for cutting a thread of different pitch. The cross-slide may have angular adjustment 29 for cutting taper threads, the lead-screw being driven through a universal joint to allow such adjustment.
