Abstract
108,687. Hopkinson, A. Oct. 13, 1916. Milling screws.-In apparatus for milling screw threads, the annularly grooved milling-cutter is carried on a rotary spindle which is eccentrically or radially adjustable to bring the cutter to or from the work and a secondary rotary and longitudinal movement is imparted to cause it to traverse the surface of the work. Figs. 1 and 2 show the cutter headstock, the work being carried on a separata headstock. A sleeve C is rotated by a worm-wheel c and worm c<1> which can be driven by hand or by power through a clutch c<2>. This clutch can be put in and out of gear by hand and can be put out of gear automatically on the completion of one revolution of the sleeve C by a tappet c' operating the lever C<2>. The cutter is carried by a spindle b which is mounted eccentrically in a carrier D which again is mounted eccentrically in the sleeve C. The carrier D has secured to it a ring D<2> by which it can be rotated to bring the tool up to the work and give the depth of feed required and is then locked to the sleeve C by a screw in a slot d<3>. The cutter spindle b is driven by a belt pulley P and is fed forward to cut a screw by a screwed ring E of the pitch required engaging a screw cut in the headstock or, as shown, in a hand-wheel G locked by a spring-stop. In one modification, provision is made for adjusting the bearings of the cutter spindle to allow for spring in the spindle or wear of the cutter. In another modification, the carrier D is oscillated by a lever actuated by a cam and a spring to provide for backing-off when screwing a tap. In a further modification, the cutter spindle is provided with a bearing beyond the cutter. This bearing is removed when the cutter is engaged on internal work.
