Milling helical surfaces.-In a machine for cutting helical grooves and clearance in drills, reamers, &c., the work, in the case shown, a drill blank a is mounted upon a shaft 37, which is housed in bearings 35, 36 on an inclined standard, and is rotated by worm and bevel gearing 45, 47, 49, 53 driven by belt gearing, and is moved forward longitudinally during its rotation by means of a pin mounted in a sleeve 38 angularly adjustable for different grooves, which engages a helical groove in the shaft 37. The blank a is simultaneously acted upon by a milling groove cutter 8 and a clearance cutter 30. The shaft 5 of the cutter 8 is mounted in an eccentric bush 4, Fig. 7, in a sleeve 6 carried by a hand-operated transverse slide 3, and is rotated by toothed gearing driven from a belt-operated shaft 9. The spindle 28 of cutter 30 is driven by belt gearing and is mounted on an axially-movable slide 23 mounted upon an inclined side of a wedge-shaped slide 19 which can be moved in two directions at right angles. After a predetermined movement of the shaft 37, a collar 63 thereon engages a slide 62 to rotate the eccentric 4 to reduce gradually the depth of the grooves, and to withdraw a catch 56 to enable a spring to throw the driving-worm 47 out of gear, the head 48 carrying the gearing being pivotally mounted for this purpose.
