Abstract
194,389. Richards Thread Milling Machine Co. (1918), Ltd., Burt, L. N., and Freeborn, J. E. Dec. 9, 1921. Lathes; milling-lathes ; gear-cutting. - Relates to lathes and consists in turning or boring and screwthreading, by means of a hob, two oppositely-tapered surfaces. The work is carried in a spindle being rotated by worm gear, the worm b of which is given a reciprocating movement by cams b<2>, b<3> on pinions, driven from the spindle a<2>, to minimize the production of facets on the thread. The hob-spindle e<2> is supported in a sleeve h<1> which carries the boring or turning tool h, and is capable of being held in two positions 180‹ apart to operate on the two tapered surfaces. The spindle and sleeve are carried by a cross-slide f movable or. a saddle f' which is traversed by rack-and-pinion gear driven from the machine-shaft a. The hob-spindle e<2> is driven by worm gear e, e from the shaft a. The cross slide is operated by a screw k<1>, Fig. 5, rotated by a hand-wheel o or by power gear provided with automatic disengaging means actuated when the tool has cut to the desired depth. The pinion l is driven from the machine-shaft a and carries a half-clutch which can engage with a second halfclutch on a spindle having a transverse pin n at its other end. When the pin n lies in a transverse slot n<1> in the hand-wheel movements of the latter are transmitted to the operating screw k<1> by the pin n and key k<2> and the cross slide is moved to the desired position. When the power feed is required, the spindle k is pulled outwards, by the knob k<3>, to engage the clutch and the spindle and screw are thus rotated by power through an angle determined by turning the graduated hand-wheel through the said angle and locking it by the set-screw o<1>. When the pin n has rotated into alinement with the slot n<1>, the spring shown disengages the clutch. Reversing means are provided for the withdrawal of the saddle and spindle e<2>.
