Abstract

525,751. Lathes. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and ADCOCK, H. Feb. 28, 1939, No. 6524. [Class 83 (iii)] A screwthread cutting mechanism for a lathe comprises a chasing-cutter f mounted in a tool holder e which is movable transversely of the work c and carries a nut segment h engaging a lead screw i, the tool holder being mounted on a longitudinal slide a which carries means for moving the tool holder to and from the work. The nut segment is preferably secured to a post g on the tool holder by a spring plunger j so that the nut may be disengaged if abnormal resistance is encountered. An opening n in the tool holder carries an inclined abutment shoulder o and an end member x carries another inclined shoulder w these shoulders co-acting with a vertically movable member m mounted in the slide. A spring q bearing at one end on an abutment s fixed to the slide normally urges the tool holder away from the work, the parts then being in the position shown in Fig. 4 with the nut disengaged. The lead screw which is driven from a shaft z through a clutch, not shown, is mounted in bearings y carried by a cross slide 3 on which the slide a is mounted. In operation, during rotation of the master screw, a cam 4 on the screw, depresses the member m whereby the surfaces o, p coact to move the tool holder up to the work against the spring pressure and to engage the nut segment. The depth of cut is determined by the cross slide 3. At the end of the ensuing longitudinal movement a wedge piece 6 on the slide a encounters an adjustable stop 5 and is moved against a spring 8 to shift the member m upwardly thus withdrawing the tool and the nut segment, Fig. 4. The slide a is then returned by a spring 14 or by a weight and the operation is repeated when the member m is once more depressed by the cam 4. Further depth feed may be imparted by the cross-slide 3 and when the required thread is completed the lead screw is stopped by disengaging the clutch in the drive of the shaft z.
