Abstract

Lathes.-In a lathe for turning. shaping, and backing-off milling-cutters, gauges, taps, &c., the work is carried in a chuck f and is supported by a tail centre f<1>. The tool is carried in a holder h which is adjustable in the slide-nut b bv a screw l rotatable by a hand-wheel k, and is given the required movement towards the work by one of two cams e, e', carried by a grooved spindle g, the return movement being effected by a spring n. The traverse is effected by a lead-screw c and a nut v. When the nut is secured to the slide-rest by the pins i, the movement is uniform, but when the nut is freed, intermittent movement is given to the slide-rest. The nut moves uniformly compressing a spring d, the rest being locked by a brake p released at intervals by a bellcrank lever r actuated by a cam on a shaft s which is oscillated by a lever t raised at intervals by a cam u on the chuck f.
