120,997. McWilliam, G. W., and McWilliam, A., (trading as Bromac Engineering Co.). Dec. 13, 1917. Turning. - Relates to means for regulating the depth of cut-in lathes and similar machine tools. Figs. 1 and 2 show a hand-wheel a fast on a spindle b by which the cross-slide of the lathe or other part is actuated. Secured to the handwheel or spindle is a disk c in which is cut a spiral groove c<2>. A ball e moves in this spiral groove and also in a radial groove d<1> in a disk d that can be secured to a fixed disk h<2> by means of a bolt k, the head k<1> of which is movable in a tapered groove in the disk d. After the tool has been adjusted roughly by the handwheel a, the disk d is secured so that the ball c is at the outer end of the spiral groove. After making a cut, the tool can be withdrawn by the hand-wheel, the ball c meanwhile moving inwards along the spiral groove. In feeding the tool up again, the wheel is turned until the ball is again at the end of the groove. Any further movement of the wheel to feed the tool causes the disk d to rotate in frictional contact with the disk h<2>, the amount of feed being shown by the graduations on the disks d, h<2>.
