Abstract

11,526. General Composing Co. March 30, [Convention date]. Lathes.-In an automatic lathe, the tools which are capable of being moved from the front axially of the work are arranged on a bracket above the work, and the bed terminates immediately behind the cross-slides so as to leave clear the space in front of the machine. The work spindle a is rotated in the usual manner from a pulley b and drives, through worm gearing c, d, e, the main cam shaft f which controls the motions of the various parts. The transverse tool slides h are arranged on the front of the machine, and the longitudinally sliding saddle for boring, screwing, and like tools is arranged on a bracket i. This is formed in two parts, one part k being adapted to slide on the other for adjustment; or in the case of more than one tool, they are held in a turret rotatably mounted on a part similar to the part k. The tool is fed through a series of racks and pinions from a cam n, and is mounted on a lever w in the case of a single tool, but engaged by the lever in the case of a turret tool-holder. The-return of the parts is effected by a spring y.
