Abstract

18,163. Lambourne, A. E., and Warrick & Co., J. Dec. 30. Attachments for turning.-An attachment to lathes for use in screwcutting is described with reference to threading the noses of shells. A shaft 8 is mounted in a bracket 9, Fig. 1, supported by the bed, and a bracket 14 supported by the saddle, and is driven by a gear on the chuck and carries a lead-screw 16. The feed-screw of the crossslide 17 is replaced by the lever motion 18. The top slide carries a chaser 27 and a rack member 26 for engaging tangentially above the lead-screw. In operation, the chaser is fed into the shell, as controlled by a limit stop 28, and the lever 18 is operated to put on a sufficient cut, thereby at the same time engaging the rack and screw. Successive cuts are taken until the full depth of thread is reached as determined by the stop 31. In a modification, a resiliently-mounted nut section 33, Fig. 4, engages with the lead-screw.
