Abstract

111,356. Herbert, A., and Milburn, J. Dec. 5, 1916. Lathes.-A lathe for cutting extremely accurate threads and particularly suitable for machining screw gauges has a rectangular box-bed A supported at three points on balls which engage liners in sockets D, D', D<2>. The liner fills the socket D; in sockets D<1> there is play in one direction, and in socket D<2> there is play in two directions. A lateral upstanding flange F runs from end to end of the upper face of the bed, and the head and tail stocks G, H are bolted both to the flange and to the bed of the lathe. The lead-screw is located in line with the centre of the slideway upon which the tool slide is mounted. The slide moves inwardly against a fixed stop K and carries an engaging projection L controlled by a micrometer adjustment M. The slide is actuated by rack and pinion gear through a lever J<1>. The headstock centre N is fixed. A face-plate within the casing 0 is driven by toothed gear from the spindle 1 and carries a driver P. The tool is mounted longitudinally and eccentrically in a cylindrical casing which is rotatable in a tool-carrier clamp for the purpose of adjusting the height of the tool relatively to the work. A hanging frame T carries bearings for gearing driving the lead-screw. It abuts against the end of the lathe and is provided with a clamping bolt U. The slot V allows two of the gears to be disengaged to throw the guide-screw out of action. The pinion 9 is used for reverse screw cutting.
