Abstract

Milling; i screwing lathes.-A lathe for turning shafting or cutting helical or screw threads on spindles has a double slide-rest, the part 2 carrying a milling-cutter for removing the bulk of the metal, while the finishing cut is simultaneously taken by a turning-tool or a second milling-cutter on the part 3. The cutter 8 is angularly adjustable on a vertical slide 5, and is driven by bevel gearing 12, 11, 10, shafts 6, 13, 9, and a speed cone 15. For plain cylindrical work, the cutter is set vertically, while for screw-threads it is set at the required angle. A longitudinal groove may be cut by holding the work stationary, the cutter being set horizontally. For ordinary turning, the work is driven by the ordinary cone 21, but, when the milling-cutter is used, the mandrel is rotated by worm gearing 17, 18, 20 from a speed cone 16. The saddle is traversed by a leading-screw and change gearing in the ordinary way. A steady rest 25 may be used.
