Abstract

Combined turning, boring, drilling, milling, and tapping machines.-The spindle 9 of a boring and drilling machine of the horizontal-spindle type which can also be used for other operations such as tapping, milling, grooving, slotting, &c. can be rotated with or without axial feed, or can have axial movement without rotation, and is carried in a vertically adjustable saddle 4 on a standard 2 movable on horizontal ways 1. In a modification, a work table is moved instead of the standard. The spindle is screwed at 29 to fit a nut, by which it is moved axially with or without rotation. A vertical shaft 6, Fig. 2, is connected to the spindle by a 12-change gear contained in the saddle, to the screw 7 for raising and lowering the saddle, and to a vertical shaft 8 for traversing the standard or table. The various change-bears are controlled by levers at 178, 179, 180, 232, 233 on the saddle, and a hand-wheel 148 is provided for feeding the spindle and adjusting the saddle.
