Combined turning and boring or drilling, milling, and tapping machines; boring - bar machines.-Relates to horizontal - spindle, machines for boring, tapping, and milling, and consists in mounting the spindle so that undesirable strains in the framework are avoided and in arranging the levers controlling the various movements so that they are readily accessible to the attendant in front of the machine. The spindle 5, Figs. 5 and 7, is mounted in the vertical axis of the supporting standard 3, and in a plane passing through the centre line of the bed 2. It is mounted in a saddle 4 which is balanced by a weight 18<a> and is raised and lowered by a screw 29. The spindle or an extension thereof may be supported in a bearing 40<a> in a standard 40. This bearing is raised and lowered with the spindle by a screw 40<b> geared to the screw 49 as shown in Fig. 7. The spindle 5 is driven through helical gearing 8, 8<b> and a feathered sleeve 6, from a vertical shaft 7, Fig. 1, which itself is driven through reversing change-speed gearing from a shaft driven by a pulley 10. The direction is controlled by a lever 14 and the speed by levers 16, 17, 17<a>. The feed of the spindle is effected by rack-and-pinion gear driven by a second vertical shaft 19 which is itself driven through reversing change-speed gearing from the main drive, controlled by levers. By means of a wheel 22, the power drive can be put out of gear, and the spindle fed by a hand-wheel 22<a>. The saddle 39a is movable longitudinally of the bed by rack-and-pinion gear controlled by a handle 38<a>, and the table 39 is movable crossways of the saddle by gear driven by a shaft 25, Fig. 7. The table 39 carries dogs to provide an automatic stop for the motion. As shown in Fig. 1, all the levers 14, 16, 17, 17<a>, 21-21<c>, 32 and 38<a> for controlling the machine are within easy reach of the attendant. In addition to the feeds obtained from the change-speed gearing, a quick traverse in either direction may be obtained through a chain drive.
