Abstract

21,068. Shann, M. H. C. Oct. 6. Milling; boring and drilling; slotting.-A machine, which is adapted to perform a number of operations, such as milling, boring, drilling, slotting, &c., at one setting of the work, is provided with means for controlling and varying the speed of the cutting and feeding operations. A vertical h a n d - operated slide D, Fig. 1, on a standard C carries a frame E, pivoted at D<1>, D' and carrying a second slide F, on which is the arm F<1>. A bridge G is supported by the slide F and arm F', and can be angularly adjusted by a worm H and wheel H<1>. A saddle J, preferably having a bearing on the bridge of the kind described in Specification No. 22,268, A.D. 1897, is traversed by a screw K<3> driven from a shaft N<3>. The saddle carries a hollow ram L in which is mounted a milling-spindle M, which can be driven from a shaft L' by either of the pairs of pinions L<4> M<4>, L<5> M<5>, or by the pinion L<7> and internal wheel M<7> on the faceplate M<3> on the spindle. The ram is driven by gearing L<13>, L<14> from the shaft L', its position and length of stroke being adjustable. The shaft L<1> is driven from a hollow power shaft N geared to the main driving-shaft P. The ram is fed vertically by causing a split nut on the saddle to engage a screw (not shown) mounted on the ram and rotated by gearing from the shaft N<3> or by a hand-wheel N<6>. The hollow power shaft N contains a feed-shaft N<1>, Fig. 8, the shaft N driving the shaft N' through a reversing and variable speed train of wheels mounted in a frame T. The shaft N passes through a sleeve N<2> passing through the outer pivot of the bridge, and carries a sleeve R which can be clutched to the shaft or driven through a reducing back gear. The sleeve drives an ordinary crown reversing-train R', imparting motion to a shaft R<3>. This shaft drives a shaft R, either by a pair of mitre-wheels R', R<5> or by reducing-wheels R<41>, R<51>, a clutch R' being provided. The shaft R<6> similarly drives a shaft R<10> by mitre-wheels R<8>, R<9> or by reducing- gear R<12>, R<13>, R", R<15>, each controlled by a clutch R". The shaft R<10> drives a shaft R<19> through mitre-wheels or through unequal wheels and a back gear R<20>. The shaft R<19> drives the shaft N<1> through gearing R<23>, N", and drives a shaft S through gearing R<24>, S'. The shaft S is geared to the sleeve N<2>, which drives both the shafts N<3>, K<3>. The shaft N' is geared to a spindle E<2>, which serves to raise or lower the slide F and also drives a sleeve P', which is adapted to impart a feed motion to both the planing-table A and boring-table B. All the feed-motions are thus under control of the train of wheels in the frame T. The slide F is supported by a balancing chain U arranged as shown, and the ram L is hung in the bight of a chain W.
