BORING-MILL.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 3, 1913. Serial No. 804,536.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. HAG- MAN and EDWARD H. lVRAY, both citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Boring-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
()ne object of our invention is to so construct a machine for horizontal boring, drilling or milling, that so far as its operating or control levers, handles, wheels, or the like, are concerned, it will have similar equipments ,on its opposite longitudinal sides, 2'. e., all of the controlling members found on one side of the machine are duplicated-on the other side, and-the machine as a whole is practically bilaterally symmetrical, its parts being so disposed in order that it may be rapidly and conveniently operated by aworkman, regardless of whether he has previously been accustomed to operate only machines having their control mechanism on but a single side.
These objects and other advantageous ends we attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of the opposite sides of a machine constructed according to our invention; and Fig. 3 is a plan, I
partly in section, Figs. 1 and 2.
In the above drawings, 1 represents the base frame of the machine on which is fixed a vertically extending main post 2, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is so made that its two opposite sides are similar in shape. Also mounted on the base frame, which is more or less elongated according to the nature of the work to be operated upon, is an outboard of the machine shown in post 3 which may be adjustablelongitudinally of said frame if desired. Also longitudinally adjustable of the ,main frame 1,
upon that portion thereof between the posts 2. and 3, is a carriage 1 having a work-supporting table 5 which is adjustable transversely of the frame. Between this table or carriage and the outboard post 3 we provide a supplementary carriage or table 6, which is likewise adjustable longitudinally of'the base frame 1.
The main post 3 is preferably made as a hollow casting, open or slotted through its back and front faces and from its top nearly to its base, for the reception of a saddle 7, which is operative on guideways on the front face of said post. This saddle with its attached parts is counterbalanced by a weight 9 connected to it by a cable 10, guided by suitably placed pulleys,
one of which is indicated at 11 as carried on an arm 12 projecting from the top of the main post 8. The
various power driven parts of this machine are actuated from an electric motor 13, whose operation is governed by a controller 11, and it is to be noted that the spindle 15 of said controller extends transversely of the machine, having fixed to its ends two operating handles 16 and 16 It is to be understood that this invention is not concerned with the detailed mechanism whereby power is transmitted from the motor 13 to any of the parts driven thereby,
and for this reason such mechanism has to a great extent been omitted from the drawings. It is noted, however, that the tool carlying spindle 17 is mounted in the saddle 7, which is vertically adjustable on the post 8, and said spindle, whose rear end is supported in a supplementary bearing 18 carried by the rear part of the saddle, is longitudinally adjustable in the latter by means of suitable gearing (not shown) actuated by a spindle 19 having operatinghand wheels 20 and 20 at opposite sides of the machine.
For controlling the combinations of earing whereby the speed of operation 0 the various driven elements may be governed, we provide a spindle 21, having fixed to its opposite ends, at opposite sides of the machine, two levers 22 and 22, and for controlling the feed-back gearing we provide a second transversely extending spindle 23 which at the opposite sides of the machine has fixed to it two operating levers 24 and 24?.
For controlling the movements of the spindle and the so-called milling movement of the saddle in the post 2, we provide a transversely extending spindle 25 having two controlling levers 26 and 26 on the opposite sides of the machine.
Similarly the feed or traverse of the table or saddle is controlled by a spindle 2 having levers 28 and 28, changes of food are controlled by a spindle 29 having two controlling levers 30 and 30", and the reversal of the table and saddle feed or traverse is controlled by a spindle 31 having two controlling levers 32 and 32. Further, the longitudinal adjustment of the table by hand is accomplished through another transversely extending spindle 33 whose ends project at opposite sides and are suitably squared to receive crank handles 34 and 34, and the vertical adjustment of the saddle may be accomplished by hand through a spindle 35 whose ends project at opposite sides of the machine and are suitably ject at opposite sides thereof, are also 7 squared to receive a crank handle. The
cross adjustment of the table 5 may be accomplished'through a spindle 36 extending transversely thereof and 1ts ends which prosquared to receive an operating handle.
From the above description the fact will be appreciated that our machine is externally of.a similar construction on its two opposite sides, and its various controlling v or operating spindles each has afhandle,
lever or Wheel on each side of the machine so that it may be run by a workman even though he has been previously accustomed to operatlng a machine whose controlling means were disposed on but one side only.
" By our construction any adjustment or control of the machine may be made from either side at will, thusallowing the saving of considerable time, which has hitherto been required fora workman to pass from one side of the machine to the other in order to make the necessary adjustments, etc., under .op-
erating conditions. i
If it be desired to traverse the table 5 by power, this may be accomplished by thIOW-r ing into operative engagement the members of a controlling clutch, with the result that through other suitable gearing well known to the art, power is transmitted from the motor 13 to said table, and for controlling the operation of the clutch Iprovide itsoperating lever 37-, which projects at one side of the machine, with an operating handle 38. Said handle through a rod '39 extending transverselyof the machine is op erable from the opposite side by means of a second handle 38 carried byisaid rod in a rear; a bilaterally symmetrical saddle ad-v justably mounted in the slot of the post and extending in the central vertical plane of the base frame, an arm projecting from the top of the post at an angle to saidjeentral plane; a pulley on the arm; a cable passing over the pulley and having one end conn'ected to the saddle; a; counter weight on the opposite end of said cable; {LID/M101 for driving the machine mounted at the rear thereof with its armature shaft in the central plane; a series of spindles for controlling the operation of the machine and extending transversely of the same; with two controlling handles respectively fixed on the opposite ends of-each of said spindles in positions to be operated from opposite sides of the machine.
