Abstract
220,400. Kitson, H. V. May 25, 1923. Boring-bar machines; boring and turning mills.-Wheel centres and the like are machined on a vertical turning and boring mill having an annular work-table rotating about a vertical axis, a boring-bar axially movable in relation to the table, and tools independent of the boring-bar, the majority of the tools being provided with automatic stops. The boring-bar is advanced through the table from above and is supported below the table, and the bar and the table are positively rotated in opposite directions. A back-toback machine is provided comprismg two work-tables 28 having clamps 31, 31a for the work. Each table is independently driven from an electric motor or a belt pulley 49 through a clutch 54, horizontal shaft 48, vertical shaft 43 and spur gear 45. The boring-bar 35 is also driven from the vertical shaft 43 through a clutch 50 and gearing 42, 41, 40. The boring-bar is provided with a two-speed and reverse feed through two clutches on a shaft 65 and a rotating nut 70. The slow feed is obtained from the vertical shaft 43 through spur gears, a vertical shaft 62, and skew gears, and the fast feed is obtained direct from the power shaft 48. The slow and fast feed clutch is controlled by a hand lever 79 or may be automatically tripped by a nut on a power-driven shaft 83. A hand lever 82 controls the clutch for reversing the feed, and a hand-wheel 95 is provided for feeding by hand. Eight tools A - - H, Fig. 7, are carried in separate tool-holders, all except two, B and G, being fitted with automatic feed and stop motion in addition to the hand gear. The automatic feed for the tools is obtained through screw-andnut gearing driven through clutches from vertical shafts 101, 163 gearing with the toothed ring 45 on the work-table. The tools A, B are carried by a common vertical slide 112 but are on independent horizontal slides 114, 113. C, Dare on independent vertical and horizontal slides, and E, F are on a common vertical slide 171. The tools G, H, Fig. 22, for working on the underside of the boss of the work are carried in holders within the annulus of the work-table. The tool G is fed vertically by a hand-wheel 194 through shafts 193, 198 and worm and screw-and-nut gearing, and is fed radially by the hand-wheel 195 through shafts 196, 191 and worm gear. The tool H is mounted in a holder 199 traversed horizontally in a slide, 200 by rack-and-pinion gear 201 actuated either by a hand-wheel 205 or automatically by a cam 213 rotating with the work-table and operating a pawl and ratchet gear. The slide 200 is moved vertically by means of a hand-wheel 208.
