Abstract

25,990. Hulse & Co. and Bates, H. Dec. 19. Lathes.-A screw-cutting lathe with duplex tool slides 6, 7 on the saddle 2 has means for simultaneously withdrawing the tools at the end of a traverse and for setting the cut. The oppositelythreaded screws 4, 5 for operating the slides are longitudinally held in sleeves 8, 9, screwed to work in a nut bearing 10 and geared together by pinions 11, 12. The tools may be withdrawn quickly and simultaneously by rotating the pinion 12 by a handle 13. The additional depth of cut for each traverse may be obtained by turning either one of the screws, which are connected by pinions 16, 17 secured to the screws, friction rods, and nuts 20 in the usual way. An automatic feed may be obtained from a wheel gearing with the pinions 16, 17. Notched discs 14 engaged by spring pins (not shown) hold the screws while the sleeves are turned.
