Abstract

1,195,837. Photographic direct positive images. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. Oct.6, 1967 [Oct. 24, 1966], No. 47631/66. Heading G2C. A photographic direct positive image is produced by exposing a light-sensitive material having an internal-latent-image silver halide emulsion and developing with an energetic surface developer in the presence of a substance or substances which liberate iodide ions and/or bromide ions in aqueous media and in the presence of hydrazine or a hydrazine salt, the hydrazine or salt thereof being present in the developer and/or in a processing liquid with which the lightsensitive material may be wetted before development. The substances liberating iodide and/or bromide ions may be present in the developer or in the emulsion or another layer of the lightsensitive material and may be incorporated therein by inhibition before or after the exposure step. The substances include molecular iodine and addition products thereof, organic quaternary ammonium, phosphonium, sulphonium and iodonium iodides and chloroiodates, inorganic watersoluble iodides and bromides and monobromoacetic acid. The surface developer is a silver halide developer containing no effective amount of a silver halide solvent and is energetic by reason of its high pH, elevated temperature, high concentration, the absence of restrainers such as potassium bromide and/or the presence of activators such as cyclohexylamine, phenylhydrazine or polyethylene glycols or derivatives thereof. The developing agent may be partially or completely incorporated into the light-sensitive material and the developer may therefore comprise an alkaline aqueous activating solution free from developing agent. Developing agents mentioned are hydroquinone mixtures with metal or 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidinone but a colour developer may be used in the presence of a colour coupler to give, after silver bleaching, a positive colour image, and the process may be used in multicolour materials. Development may be conducted while overall exposing the material to light. The internal latent image emulsion is not or only slightly chemically ripened. An anti-foggant may be present in the light-sensitive material, possibly in more than anti-foggant amounts.
