Abstract
1,186,599. Xerographic charging. RANK XEROX Ltd. June 30, 1967 [July 1, 1966], No.30209/67. Heading G2H. A multiplicity of discrete alternate first and second areas of charge at two different potentials are formed on a xerographic plate by charging at least the first areas to a first potential, and depositing charge producing particles in the second areas. The plate may be first uniformly charged to the first potential (e. g. by corona discharge friction or a roller) and then to a pattern of the second potential by either (a) applying a corona discharge of opposite polarity to the first potential through a grid which may be earthed or at a potential which only allows charged particles to pass through its apertures, of (b) placing adjacent the plate a grid maintained at a high potential having a polarity opposite to that of the first potential. Alternatively, the uncharged plate may be subjected to negative and positive corona discharges through a grid having the wires in one direction at one polarity and the wires in the perpendicular direction at the opposite polarity. The charged plate may be imagewise exposed to form a latent image which is developed and cleaned for reuse after transfer of the developed image. The grid may be in the form of a roller or endless belt and provided with shields in a line by line copier. The charge pattern enables large areas to be fully developed.
