Abstract

1152308 Electrostatic charge images EASTMAN KODAK CO 29 April 1966 [30 April 1965 27 Sept 1965] 48221/68 Divided out of 1149901 Headings H1X and X5D [Also in Divisions B6 and H1 ] Developable electrostatic charge images are formed on insulating surfaces by directing a flow of ions (e.g. from a corona discharge) through two ion-permeable arrays, one of which has an image pattern of insulating and conductive areas or of charged and non-charged areas to area-modulate the flow of ions, the other being conductive and used to modulate the intensity of the ions. The first array preferably composes a conductive grid coated with a photo-conductor, optionally together with an insulator, the pattern being formed by imagewise exposure, optionally after uniform charging. The two arrays may be integrally combined by insulating spacers. In embodiments, two conductive arrays, and/or two first arrays are used, in the latter case, an array in the form of photoconductive grid is used to modulate the flow of ions on to an insulating array to form thereon a charge iamge which is then used to form charge images on one or more receptor sheets. Multiple images may also be formed from a photoconductive array used in the dark. The photoconductive grid may be exposed as a full-frame, or reflex exposed line-by-line. The images may be developed, and/or colour images formed, as described in original Specification 1149901.
