Abstract

1404218 Electro-photographic element; copying apparatus MITSUBISHI DENKI KK 16 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53009/72 Headings G2C and G2H An electro-photographic element comprises a support having a conductive surface, a photoconductive layer on the surface and photo-sensitive to a first wavelength range of radiation and a layer of a photo-conductive insulating material on the photo-conductive layer which is transmissive to the first range but photo-sensitive to a second wavelength range of radiation outside the first range. The conductive surface may be vapour-deposited Al or a carbon coating or the support may be of Al. The photo-conductive layer is preferably sensitive to visible radiation and may be CdS doped with Cu and Cl in a vinyl, acrylic or cellulose resin. Alternatively CdS, Se+Te, ZnO, CdS+ZnS, CdS+CdSe or polyvinylcarbazole may be used. The photo-conductive insulating layer is preferably sensitive to U.V. radiation and may be polyvinyl carbazole optionally sensitized with picric acid, polyvinyl pyrene, polyvinyl anthracene, ZnO, ZnS, or ZnS+CdS. An electro-photographic apparatus comprises the element together with means for imagewise irradiating at a first wavelength, means for simultaneously charging to form an electrostatic latent image and means for irradiating at a second wavelength thereby to erase the image. In an embodiment, an electro-photographic element 10 is exposed to a visible image 30 while a corona charger 34 is moved A across its surface. The element is moved B to a transfer position past an incandescent lamp 36 which erases residual charge on the element but increases the stability of the latent image. The image is transferred to a dielectric-coated tape 38 and wet developed at 44. The developed image is dried at 46. The element 10 is moved D back for re-use past a U.V. lamp 50 which removes any residual latent image. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) the element 10 may be moved (F) beneath a corona charger (72) and light source (70) to charge the element to the opposite polarity before charging by corona 34. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a cylindrical element (60) is used and the latent image is developed on the cylinder by electroscopic particles (66) prior to transfer to a dielectric-coated sheet.
