Abstract

1,178,830. Electric couplings. AMP Inc. 10 Jan., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 1721/69. Heading H2E. An electrical connector for making releasable connection with either a spark plug stem or an ignition voltage distributer receptacle consists of a generally tubular contact portion 4 to one end of which a connecting portion 2 is joined by a neck 14. The contact portion 4 has a radially outwardly projecting circumferential rib 16 with which a radially outwardly projecting longitudinal rib 18 merges. Two other ribs 24, (26) (Fig. 1, not shown), not merging with 16, a pimple 29 on rib 18 together with ribs 18, 16 facilitate insertion of the contact portion into the receptacle. The contact portion also has radially inwardly projecting pimples (28) (Fig. 1, not shown), generally triangular, which engage beneath the head of a spark plug to lock the connector to the stem. The portion 2 consists of a U-shaped ferrule for crimping the bared end of an insulated cable, an inwardly projecting rib 10 and a series of lances 12 press against the insulated cable restricting motion. The merging of the longitudinal rib with the circumferential rib reinforces portion 4 against the cable being pulled transversely. In another embodiment of the connector (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), all the longitudinal ribs are joined to the circumferential rib. The connector is made by rolling a blank of spring sheet metal.
