Abstract

1,177,166. Electro-plating with silver. SEL-REX CORP. Aug.30, 1967, No.39729/67. Heading C7B. A conductive surface is electro-plated with silver from an aqueous bath comprising per litre 4 to 75 g. (calculated as Ag) alkali metal silver cyanide, 2 to 100 g. acid plus anionic buffering agent, 2 to 20 g. alkali metal or ammonium thiocyanate, alkali to provide a #H of 6 to 7À5, and optionally up to 100 g. of additional ionic metal. Preferably the bath is just acid; the acid plus anionic buffer is a mixture of a weak acid, e.g. maleic, malonic, sulphanilic, phosphorous or orthophosphoric acid, and an alkali metal or ammonium salt of the weak acid; the alkali is lithium sodium potassium or ammonium hydroxide, ammonia or an alkaline amine; and the additional ionic metal such as nickel, cobalt, iron, copper, zinc, indium, arsenic, antimony or bismuth is present in sufficient amount to effect brightening and may be present as a complex, e.g. nickel tetraethylenepentamine or potassium antimonyl tartrate. It is stated that selenium and mercaptobenzthiazole do not effect brightening when added to the baths.
