A skirting heater for heating ambient air primarily by radiation comprises a rectangular casing subdivided by a vertical partition 6 and horizontal partitions 9, 10 to define an air supply chamber 11, a burner chamber 12, a combustion chamber 13 and a discharge chamber 14. Cut-away corners in the vertical partition 6 define lower and upper chamber interconnecting passages 7 and 8. The back wall 2 of the casing has an auxiliary casing 15 attached thereto. In operation, combustion air is fed from a supply tube 17 through casing 15 and chambers 11, 12 to a high pressure gas burner 21 located in the chamber 12 below a longitudinal slit 20 formed in the horizontal partition 9. The combustion gases which flow along an extended path through chambers 13, 14 exit through a discharge tube 19. As shown, a second vertical partition 22 is provided to define with the partition 6 an open vertical passage 23 through which ambient air circulates and is further heated. Normally, the rectangular heater casing, which is mounted on feet 24, is surrounded by a decorative or protective casing (not shown).
