Abstract
1,171,380. Hopper barges. A. VURK & ZONEN'S SCHEEPSWERVEN N.V. 20 Dec., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 57817/67. Heading B7A. A hopper barge comprising a hold 1 and having closable passageways 4 adjacent the stem and the stern and constructed to allow, when open, water to flow through the hold during sailing of the barge for the material in the hold to be carried along with the water, has a double bottom 2 which constitutes a buoyancy chamber extending along the entire length and width of the hold and has an upper surface 3 forming a floor for the hold and a buoyancy sufficient for the upper surface to rise to at least the level of the water when the barge is unloaded. Each passageway is closable by means of a valve member 5 comprising a segment of a hollow cylinder hinged at 6 and operated by an hydraulic jack 11. A scraper member 7 is provided for the valve member.
