Abstract

1,159,162. Concrete marine craft. H. E. DEMPSTER. 14 Oct., 1966 [24 Oct., 1965], No. 45932/66. Heading B7A. [Also in Divisions B5 and E1] A pontoon unit for use singly or assembled with others to form a pontoon, pontoon assembly, floating pier, wharf or other marine structure is made by casting concrete or other settable material in a floating mould 9. The mould is provided with cell-cores forming compartments 11, 23, 24, 25 which are filled with air to float the mould into which material is introduced to form the pontoon unit 1, the cellcores forming chambers 8 into which air is introduced through valves 12 to separate the unit from the mould when valves 13 in the latter are opened to cause water to flood the compartments 11, 23, 24, 25 to sink the mould. The chambers 8 which may be air filled and have open bottoms or contain bladders 18 or flexible containers 19-21, or be filled with a solid buoyant material, form the flotation chambers of the pontoon. The units may be square, rectangular, hexagonal or circular in plan and may be connected together by rings 3 at the end of ribs 2 on the cover which may support a superstructure 6. As shown the rings 3 may accommodate stanchions 4 provided with anchors 5 cast in the compartments 15-16 of the mould, the anchors serving as ballast or to support the pontoon structure on the floor of the body of water 22.
