Abstract

1514461 Floating breakwaters and Harbours FLOATING BREAKWATERS LTD 12 May 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 6886/74 Heading B7A A buoyant concrete floating breakwater is V-shaped in plan and has a buoyancy such that its upper surface is in use just awash. As described, it is internally subdivided into buoyancy chambers which contain blocks of polystyrene foam and maybe monolithic or be formed by a forward part 1 and two wing sections 2. The leading edges 9 of the breakwater slope upwardly and rearwardly and wedge shaped projections 25 having sloping forward faces and vertical rearward faces maybe located on the upper surface, which in use, is awash, to further dissipate wave energy. The breakwater may have a single point mooring for a tanker attached to its centre line so as to afford shelter to a tanker loading from the mooring (Fig. 6, not shown). The tips of the wings each carrying a vertical fin which extends into the water so that the breakwater aligns with the prevailing sea and wind conditions. A plurality of such breakwaters may be used together either spaced apart or connected together at their wing tips. Alternatively, floating jetties may be provided in the breakwater's re-entrant area 12 to provide boat berths.
