Abstract

831,283. Mooring dolphins. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Dec. 11, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1957], No. 6772/57. Class 68(2) A ship berthing installation (Fig. 1A) comprises a short floating pontoon 1 which is anchored by pivoted arms 4 to fixed dolphins 2 mounted on piles and is connected to a fixed pier 5 by a pivoted bridge 6. The ship is moored to bollards on floating dolphins 7 which move freely with the tide on tubular high tensile steel piles driven into the sea bed and projecting above high water level. Each reinforced concrete dolphin is octagonal in plan and is divided internally into separate watertight compartments 12. Through the structure there is a central passage which is octagonal near the top and carries on each face a bronze roller 18. At the lower end the passage is circular and has keyed to it a rubbing ring 19. Resilient fenders are provided on the dolphin. The installation may comprise two or more pontoons or piers and in this case one or more of the floating dolphins will be common to each pair of pontoons. In a modification there are berthing dolphins provided on the off-shore side of the pontoons which are thus protected from damage. In a further modification one or more floating dolphins are associated with a tee-head jetty and in a third modification a short finger berthing installation is provided for two ships lying one either side of it and moored to floating dolphins.
