Abstract

1,155,746. Metal-vapour lamps. BRITISH LIGHTING INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Sept.. 1966. No. 40596/66. Heading HID. The lead wires in a low pressure alkali metal discharge lamp are embedded in. sleeves of insulating material extending within the envelope, the sleeves being wholly screened from ion bombardment by a shield. In a sodium lamp in which the lead wires 2 are provided with glass sleeves 4, a plate shield 8 may, if of metal or metal gauze, be welded to one of the wires, or if of ceramic may be sealed to both the wires or to the ends of the tubes 4. Alternatively, the shield may be in the form of a pair of cups (Fig. 7, not shown) encircling the tubes and welded at their closed ends to the wires 2 where they leave the tubes; the cups may either be of nickel-plated steel or wire mesh and act as part of the anode, or of ceramic.
