Abstract

1,149,270. Non-woven fabric. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Nov., 1967 [29 Nov., 1966], No. 53437/66. Heading D1R. A bonded non-woven fibrous material has a specific volume greater than 12.5 cm<SP>3</SP>/gm and is composed of filaments (or fibres) comprising two-dimensionally crimped composite filaments each of which consists of two polymers in a sheath/core configuration. The sheaths bond the fibres or filaments together at their points of contact. Crimped homofilaments or side-by-side bicomponent filaments may also be present. The filaments may contain polyamides, polyester amides, polysulphonamides, polyolefins, polyurethanes or combinations thereof. The filaments can be bonded by chemical means or by heating. In the Examples sheath/core filaments are formed into a tow or 83,000 to 162,00 denier, drawn 3.6-4.2X in steam and mechanically crimped to a crimp index of 20-59% with 8-22 crimps per crimp inch with a denier per filament of 4-5.6. These filaments are carded into a web, optionally rollered and heated in air to 140- 180‹C to bond the filaments.
