Abstract

1,228,026. Spinning yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17890/68. Headings D1F and D1W. A simulated staple fibre yarn the fibres of which are of various lengths is produced by dividing a non-woven web of randomly-laid continuous filaments into strips and twisting the fibres of the strips together to form the yarn. The web may be formed by withdrawing synthetic polymer e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide and/or polyipsilon caprolactam, filaments from packages or a melt spinning head and laying them by nip rolls or air ejection in random or predominantly random manner onto a foraminous conveyor belt: it may be stabilised, by steaming, before stitching as by use of stationary, rotary, or vibratory knives, jets of hot air or steam, or hot wires. The strip may be twisted on a ring-spinning frame or one or more e.g. five, strips may be converged into feed-stock supplied to a breakspinning device such as described in Specification 1,031,150. Drawing and/or further drawing of filaments or yarn may be effected during and/or after twisting e.g. to produce a desired final denier. The fibres may be bonded together, before or after forming into yarn, by mechanical treatment e.g. needle punching, or adhesive bonding eg. impregnating the web, strip or yarn with a non-fibrous agent or by incorporation of binder filaments such as composite (core-and-sheath) filaments containing a potentially adhesive or heat activatable component in the web. The filaments may be crimped or have a crimp potential which can be developed at any stage.
