Abstract

1,135,943. Packaging; stoppering. UNITED GLASS Ltd. 8 Dec., 1965 [9 Dec., 1964; 12 Feb., 1965], Nos. 50087/64 and 6292/65. Headings B8C and B8T. In a process for applying a metal foil sealing membrane to a container mouth, the membrane is placed under sealing pressure on to the container mouth and is heated by an induced high frequency current to a temperature sufficient to soften a thermoplastic material coated on the membrane without softening the container mouth, whereby the membrane is removably adhered to the container without distortion of the container. A glass jar 1 is sealed by applying a membrane of aluminium foil 2 coated on its underside with a thermoplastic adhesive 3, a pulpboard wad 4, and a snap-on non-metallic closure cap 5. Pressure is supplied by a vertically reciprocable tool 6, comprising a chuck 7 of insulating material, a resilient annulus 8, and water-cooled high frequency heating coils 9. When the tool has attained its prescribed capping pressure the current is switched on, heating the aluminium foil and causing the thermoplastic coating to become soft and cause adhesion. Screw caps may also be used, the screw cap supplying the sealing pressure. The membrane itself may be in the shape of a closure cap.
