Abstract

1495544 Linings for closures; induction heat sealing UNITED GLASS Ltd 4 Feb 1975 [6 Nov 1973] 51373/73 Heading B8T A closure includes a metallic foil membrane in a cap with insulating material in the gap between the cap top and the membrane and is hermetically sealed to a container by a high frequency induction heat sealing process such as described in Specifications 1,207,306, 1,315,487 or 1,373,595, the dimensions of the gap being between 0À001 and 0À010 inches so that a thermoplastics material coating on one side of the membrane adheres to the container rim due to heat produced in the membrane by a transformer effect rather than conduction through the cap, thus avoiding overheating of the metal cap. The insulating material may be air, a lacquer or similar coating on the cap, or a backing element on the membrane such as paper adhered to the membrane by extruded polythene. The cap may be tinplate, aluminium or an aluminium alloy and the membrane may be aluminium foil. The top of the cap may have an annular groove filled with a resilient sealing medium such as plastisol.
