1408936 Seaming non-metallic sheet material UNILEVER Ltd 19 Sept 1972 [21 Sept 1971] 43276/72 Heading B5K Apparatus for sealing together two thermoplastic layers 8, 9 comprises a heatable sealing member 1 having a jaw 2 with an elongate sealing surface 3 and an opposing sealing member 4 having a jaw formed from a strip 5 of elastic material covered with a resilient thin strip 6 of metal incorporating an elongate sealing surface 7 parallel to the surface 3, the jaws being offset relatively to each other so as to cause the surface 7 to tilt during a sealing operation, Fig. 2. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the strip 5 is made of rubber and is vulcanized to the member 4 and the strip 6. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), for sealing a lid (18) to an outwardly directed annular edge flange (12) of a filled container (13), both jaws (11), (15) are annular with the heatable jaw (11) inwardly offset with respect to the jaw (15). The layers 8, 9 may be thermoplastic film or aluminium foil coated with thermoplastic film.
