Abstract

970,688. Vacuum seal containers; opening containers. AMERICAN CAN CO. March 11, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 9555/63. Headings B8D, B8P and B8T. A container for sealing a product under vacuum includes a rigid base 12 flanked by a channel 10 terminating in a curled rim 18, and a transparent flexible cover 28 which includes a skirt 36 and an outwardly extending flange 44 which takes into the channel 10 to provide the seal. A pressure-sensitive adherent gasket 24 may be carried by the inner skirt 14 of the channel 10. A clearance at 38 between the cover and the base may facilitate flexing of the cover to form a seal with the base, and this flexing may be further facilitated by beads 34, 40, 42. Alternatively the cover may engage the base at 38. An opening tab 46 for breaking the seal between the cover and the base may be arranged also to tear away a circumferential strip of the skirt 36 of the cover. The base may be of tin plate or other sheet metal, or of plastics, or stiff coated paper. The cover is preferably of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. The container may be rectangular or circular in plan.
