Abstract

1357468 Container end closures AMERICAN CAN CO 4 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 55824/72 Heading B8D An end closure for a container subjected to internal pressure has a pour opening 30 and a significantly smaller vent opening 32 which are closed by hinged raised tabs 34 and 48 respectively, the vent opening being remote from the pour opening. The peripheries of the tabs 34 and 48 underlie the peripheries of the openings 30 and 32 respectively and are hermetically sealed by frangible sealing means 46 comprising a plastisol grade polyvinyl chloride combined with a plasticizer and compounding ingredients, a plastics tape, an adhesive backed foil, or a hot melt material. The pour opening may be circular or tear drop in shape and may be surrounded by a raised bead 42 which may be interrupted at the hinge connection. The hinges (36, 54) are situated radially inwardly of the openings and have a width of 0À062 to 0À093 inches. The end closure has a peripheral reinforcing groove 24 and is conventionally seamed to the container.
