Abstract

1,231,208. Container closures. UNITED GLASS Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967], No. 48525/67. Addition to 1,135,943. Heading B8C. A closure assembly comprises a screw cap, a liner of resilient material adjacent the closed end of the cap, and a metal foil membrane coated, at least on the edge portion of its surface remote from the liner, with a thermoplastic layer, wherein there is disposed between the liner and the cap, or between the liner and the membrane, a material presenting a surface of lower coefficient of friction than the surface of the liner. As described, the material can be a coating of silicone or a layer of siliconetreated paper which is adhered to the surface of the liner. The surface of the liner can be the surface facing the cap in which case the other surface of the liner is weakly adhered to the membrane to enable the membrane and liner to be applied simultaneously to the container. The edge portion of the liner is retained in a retaining recess in the cap so that when the cap is removed the liner comes away with the cap. As an alternative to the use of silicone or silicone-treated paper the material can be a melamine formaldehyde resin applied as a coating to the surface of the liner or it can be a coating on a sulphite paper which is itself adhered to the surface of the liner; when the surface is that facing the membrane, a portion of the membrane remote from its edge is adhered to the resin by means of a spot of adhesive which will readily part from the resin when the cap is unscrewed the liner being adhered to the cap; in a modification the surface of the membrane which faces the liner is provided with a paper facing to which the spot of adhesive is adhered.
