Abstract

Age hardenable austenitic stainless steel consists of: .carbon.0.35 - 0.75% .nitrogen.0.35 - 0.75% .Cr.18.0 - 22.0% .Mn.10.5 - 14.0% .Ni.0 - 0.75 .Si.2.00 - 3.00 and optionally in a total of less than 7%:- .P.0 - 0.30% .S.0 - 0.40% .V.0 - 1.0% .Mo.0 - 2.0% .W.0 - 2.5% .Nb.0 - 1.5% .Ta.0 - 3.0% .Ti.0 - 0.5% and B, Zr, Te, Pb, Bi and Se may replace sulphur, the balance being Fe. The total C+N should not be more than 0.10% less than 0.078(Cr + 1.4 Si + 2.3 V + 1.4 Mo + 0.63 W + 2.8 Nb + 1.4 Ta - 12.5) The steels may be hardened by heating to 1150-1260 DEG C., then rapidly cooling by quenching in oil or water and then ageing by heating to 650-870 DEG C. for 10-100 hours.
