Abstract

A fuel element can made of Mg-Zr alloy having a Zr content less than 1% by weight is provided on its inner surface with an antidiffusion layer of MgO and/or MgCOa and free C for preventing the diffusion of Pu through the can. Where the irradiation exceeds a threshold of some 1000 MWd/t, Mg-Zr alloy cans have reduced strength, in particular owing to the diffusion of the Pu formed when the fuel element is irradiated. This Pu diffusion also causes a disturbing contamination of the reactor fuel channels. The anti-diffusion layer of this invention is formed by heating the can in CO 2 gas at a pressure of from 1 to 60 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and at a temperature between ambient temperature and 550‹ C., for a period of from 10 to several hundred hours and long enough for the MgO and/or MgCO 3 to form but without effecting the structural and dimensional stability of the Mg-Zr alloy. Simultaneously there is a slight deposition of carbon. The working conditions determine whether the layer includes MgO, MgCO 3 , or both. The thickness of the layer is preferably between 0.1 and 25 microns.
